Emile Berliner

He was born on May 20th, 1851 in Hannover and died on August 3rd, 1929 in Washington.

Already at the age of 14 he had to work to support his family. At the age of 15 he started working in a haberdashery. He spent his leisure time in public libraries where he preoccupied himself mainly with natural science.

1877  He invented a microphone for telephones which he sold for 75 000 S to the Bell Telephone Company.
1881 He and his brother founded the first European telephone factory in Hannover.
1883 He returned to Washimgton and worked on sound recording. In order not to copy Bell's and Tantier's invention he mainly focused on records which were easy to reproduce. His most important invention was the inroduction of the "side script".
1887 He had his gramophone patented.
1889 He engaged a German toy factory with the production of record players.
1893 He founded the "United States Gramophone Company" with the special support of relatives and friends.
 

Due to his work the gramophone and also records started their triumphal march all around the world. At the age of 78 Berliner died as a respected man in Washington.
