Dear GHT members,
The entire GHT board wishes you a Merry Christmas, all the best for 2026, and much enjoyment with your historical sound recordings.
The Society for Historical Sound Recordings is a non-profit association that was founded in Vienna in 2002, open to members from all over the world, with the aim of preserve sound recordings from the early days of sound recording (cylinders, shellac discs and, since the 2008 general meeting resolution, vinyl records), document their data, content and findings synergistically in accordance with scientific standards, archive them and make them accessible. It also aims to raise general awareness of this topic in society and to initiate and support relevant activities. The association is financed solely by private donations and membership fees.
Highlights of the GHT annual programme for 2026:
- Redesigned GHT website
- Organisation of an international conference „Discographers‘ Day“ (date/location to be confirmed)
- GHT presentations at the annual conferences of the ERA (Early Recording Association) and the CLPGS (City of London Phonograph & Gramophone Society)
- Publication of Vol. 15 of the GHT series „Beiträge zur Geschichte der Schallplattenindustrie“ (Contributions to the History of the Record Industry)
- Further development and expansion of the GHTBaseWEB V2 database
Attached you will find the minutes of the extraordinary general meeting of the GHT held on 13 December 2025. It was decided at this meeting to continue the GHT’s publishing activities as before, as no viable partnership with external partners could be found. This means that the membership fee can be kept constant. However, due to the exorbitant increase in postage costs, we are unfortunately forced to find a certain compensation for this. To this end, we are changing our membership conditions and introducing an option for you to choose whether you want to receive GHT publications in paper form or only digitally.
Standard membership of the GHT is a digital membership and now includes:
- Access to the GHT archive and the GHTBaseWEB V2 database
- All GHT publications (series „Beiträge zur Geschichte der Schallplattenindustrie“ [Contributions to the History of the Record Industry], calendar, etc.) in digital PDF format only
If you would like to receive the publications in printed form, the membership fee will increase by £20 to cover the high shipping costs. This option is only available as a subscription when paying the membership fee at the beginning of the year and cannot be purchased later.
The membership fee for 2026 (1 January to 31 December) is:
Institutional member, printed documentation: €120
Institutional member, digital membership: €100
Supporting member, printed documentation: from €100
Personal member, printed documentation: €70
Personal member, digital membership: €50
Students (with proof), printed documentation: €45
Students (with proof), digital membership: €25
With your membership, you support the goals and interdisciplinary work of the GHT.
With this in mind, we kindly ask you to pay the membership fee for 2026 by 28 February 2026. We will be happy to send you an invoice upon request.
As a member of the GHT, you have unlimited access to the GHTBaseWEB V2 database, which contains more than 850,000 historical recordings listed in discographic order. Approximately 25,000 sound files and label scans are also available from the GHT archive. If you do not yet have an access code, please click on ‚Don’t have an account? Register here‘ and enter your real name in the format <first name> <surname> and your valid email address as your username. GHTBaseWEB V2 is also the central GHT portal, through which you will soon be able to access digital GHT publications.
